The burning question that becomes a story

Every once in a while, I write a story to answer a burning question. Right Place, Wrong Duke (first published in last year’s Duke in a Box anthology) was one of those.

If you’ve read The Temptation of a Highlander, you might remember Kate and Clarissa’s friend Francis revealing his connection to the Northfield family, specifically Silas Northfield, the heir to a viscountcy and older brother of that book’s villain, Stephen Northfield. Even though he was only mentioned in passing, Silas intrigued me.

I HAD to know.

Would he be a villain or a hero? How would he respond to learning his true parentage? What would happen if he was pushed—or taken captive? I wanted to give him a story, a match to light him up. So, I gave him a funny, freckled, fetching bumbler of a Scottish lass. And I threw them together a few days before Christmas—with nothing but a little abduction between them.

This hot little tale was the result. And something tells me I’m not entirely done with Silas Northfield. But that’s a story for another day.
